Welcome to The Follies Trust

The Follies Trust is a charity and a company limited by guarantee. We have 7 directors and 10 friends who, in a voluntary capacity, guide and direct the trust.

The Trust’s first project is to restore three grade B+ listed mausolea in Knockbreda churchyard, Belfast. Architectural historian James Stevens Curl describes them as ‘the oddest and finest of buildings in the genre in Ulster, [which]…cannot be surpassed architecturally…’ [See Projects]

Once a year we have an outing so we can enjoy and admire some of Ireland’s interesting and intriguing follies.

The Follies Trust regrets to report the death on 21 December 2008 of Dick Oram MBE, one of its founder trustees. Dick was a great inspiration to all who knew him and a huge source of support and guidance to the fledgling Follies Trust.

Dick Oram

He attended the first of our lecture series given by Professor Alistair Rowan in Lisburn Museum on 4th December. He wrote to Primrose afterwards as follows: 'I am moved to write by Alistair's inspiring lecture and I have in mind your intention to publish at the end of the Knockbreda project and therefore the links between what Alistair had to say and what has been encountered in Knockbreda.

Firstly symbolism, the association of the sphere with the eternal and the cube with the temporal goes back long before Christ.....As an architectural expression, it is more common in the East than in the West, it is the perfect statement of death ie the moment the soul moves from the temporal zone to the eternal....

May he rest in peace.'
